Paint Decontamination · Frankston

Paint Decontamination in Frankston

Run your hand over the paint after a wash. If it feels gritty rather than glass smooth, washing is not the problem. Your paint has bonded contamination on it, and no amount of normal washing will shift it.

What is actually stuck to your paint

Cars pick up contamination that physically bonds to the clear coat. Washing slides straight over the top of it.

How the process works

Decontamination happens in stages, and the car has to be washed first, so the wash is included in the price.

1. Wash

The car gets a full hand wash so we are working on clean paint. There is no point claying a dirty car, you would just drag grit across the finish.

2. Iron remover

A chemical iron remover is applied across the paint. It reacts with embedded iron particles and dissolves them, and it visibly bleeds red or purple as it works. It is genuinely satisfying to watch.

3. Tar and adhesive removal

Tar spots and any adhesive residue are treated and lifted off by hand.

4. Clay bar treatment

A clay bar is worked across every panel with lubricant. It shears off whatever is left bonded to the surface, and the paint goes from gritty to completely smooth.

Decontamination includes the exterior wash, because the car has to be clean before we can start. That is why you cannot book it alongside a separate Basic Wash, the wash is already in there.

Small (hatch, sedan, coupe)$100
Medium (wagon, small SUV)$115
Large (4WD, ute, 7-seater)$130

When it is worth doing

Most cars benefit from decontamination roughly once a year. Doing it before applying any protection matters, because wax or sealant applied over contamination just locks the contamination in.

Pair it with a detail

Decontamination works well alongside a Full Detail. The paint is stripped back and clean, so any protection you add afterwards goes on properly and lasts longer.

Common questions

How much is paint decontamination in Frankston?

Paint decontamination starts at $100 for a small car, $115 for medium and $130 for large vehicles. The exterior wash is included in that price, because the car must be washed before decontamination can start.

How is this different from a normal car wash?

A wash removes loose dirt sitting on top of the paint. Decontamination removes contamination that has chemically bonded to the clear coat, such as iron fallout and tar, which washing physically cannot shift no matter how many times you do it.

How do I know if my car needs it?

Wash the car, then run your hand gently over the paint inside a thin plastic bag. If it feels gritty or bumpy rather than glass smooth, the paint is contaminated and would benefit from decontamination.

Will it remove scratches or swirl marks?

No. Decontamination removes what is stuck on top of the paint, it does not correct the paint itself. Scratches and swirl marks need machine polishing, which is a different service.

How long does paint decontamination take?

Around 30 minutes for the decontamination stage, on top of the wash. It is one of our quicker services.

How often should it be done?

For most cars, about once a year. Cars parked outside, near main roads, or near rail lines pick up contamination faster and may benefit from it more often.
